Pheidole xerophila

Pheidole xerophila is a small and adaptable Pheidole species from the arid regions of North America. As a distinct desert species, it is characterized by high heat tolerance, extreme recruitment speeds, and a very prominent soldier caste. The major workers use their powerful mandibles not only for nest defense but also for cracking open hard plant seeds.
