Are you looking for an ant species that takes the term "soldier caste" to a whole new level? Pheidole rhea is the undisputed queen of its genus. Native to the arid-Mediterranean semi-deserts of North America (southwestern USA and Mexico), it is the largest known Pheidole species worldwide.
The absolute highlight of this species is its extreme polymorphism. While the nimble minor workers are relatively small, mature colonies produce gigantic, bulky soldiers (majors). These possess monumental, deep red to dark brown heads with massive mandibles, which stand in stark contrast to the rest of the body.
