Messor aciculatus is an absolute insider tip among harvester ant fans. Unlike the Mediterranean species (Messor barbarus), it is completely polygynous (multiple queens in a colony are the norm), and it forms extremely fascinating, perfectly organized "highway" ant trails for harvesting grains. In addition, the workers are beautifully shiny pitch black.
