Lasius umbratus is a beautiful, subterranean species that captivates with its bright yellow to amber workers – but the path to a stable colony requires the skill of an experienced keeper.
Queens of Lasius umbratus found their colonies through social parasitism. This means that a newly mated queen cannot raise her brood alone. In nature, she invades an existing Lasius nest, eliminates the queen there, and has the existing workers care for her own brood. Over time, the original workers die off, and a pure, bright yellow Lasius umbratus colony emerges.
