Lasius brunneus

The Lasius brunneus (brown wood ant) is a beautiful, two-toned species that fascinates primarily through its woodland lifestyle. While the head and abdomen of the workers are dark brown, the midsection (thorax) gleams in a warm, lighter reddish-brown.

In nature, this nimble ant is found almost exclusively in rotten deadwood, under loose tree bark, or in living trees. For the ant keeper, this means: Lasius brunneus is the absolute dream inhabitant for an elegant wood formicarium or a cork nest! They show excellent recruitment behavior and are extremely active once the colony has established itself.
